It’s been almost two years since tech giant Adobe purchased the Magento eCommerce platform for $1.68 billion. Since then, the platform has experienced many enhancements, including artificial intelligence capabilities powered by Adobe Sensei.

Today, more than 250,000 global eCommerce merchants are doing business on Magento. A feature-rich interface and abundant customization options are a few reasons more people are flocking to the platform.

Since its affiliation with Adobe, Magento has been making headlines more often. Here are three things to be aware of now.

1. Recent security patches have made Magento more secure

On January 28, Adobe released a security bulletin revealing six patches for its commerce and open source products. Half of the vulnerabilities were ranked “critical,” and the other three were ranked “important.”

The security threats impact the following Magento versions:

  • Magento Commerce 2.3.4 and 2.2.11
  • Magento Open Source 2.3.4 and 2.2.11
  • Magento Enterprise
  • Magento Community Edition

Adobe has been proactive about correcting current and emergent threats, which are often brought to its attention by users within the Magento community. Without the most recent update, these issues put merchants at risk for arbitrary code execution and sensitive information disclosures.

2. UPS launches a plugin for Magento merchants

In late January, Magento was one of four eCommerce platforms that gained access to a free UPS plugin. UPS released the plugin as part of its Digital Access Program that aims to expand relationships with eCommerce solution providers.

The plugin integrates UPS services with Magento and provides highly competitive shipping rates to users. Merchants can create a UPS account inside the plugin and then go on to manage multiple aspects of shipping and fulfillment.

The plugin also:

  • Allows for label printing within platforms (including multi-order batches)
  • Gives merchants full control of shipping rates displayed to shoppers
  • Presents accurate, scheduled delivery times to shoppers during checkout
  • Provides access to real-time tracking information

“As the retail industry rapidly transforms, UPS continues to find new ways to make its industry-leading services more accessible,” UPS Chief Marketing Officer Kevin Warren said in a news release. “With UPS’s Digital Access Program, we’re leveling the e-commerce playing field for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) worldwide, allowing them to offer many of the same services offered by the world’s largest brands.”
